Legality & Logistics
Is it legal for tourists to get medical imaging in China?
Yes. Chinese hospitals treat international patients as self-pay patients. Diagnostic imaging does not require a medical visa or any special permit. Thousands of international visitors access Beijing's hospitals annually for both diagnostic and treatment services. You will need your passport for hospital registration.
Do I need a referral letter from my home doctor?
No referral is required to book with China MedPass or to access the hospital. However, if your home doctor has provided clinical notes or a referral letter, we strongly recommend bringing it β it helps our physician ensure the correct imaging protocol is ordered for your specific clinical question.
Is China MedPass a licensed medical provider?
China MedPass is a medical facilitation service, not a healthcare provider. We do not practise medicine. Imaging is performed by licensed hospital staff at accredited institutions. Reports are produced by and the professional responsibility of our licensed physician.
Report Quality
Will my home doctor accept the report?
Our reports are structured to international radiology reporting standards, include ICD-10 diagnostic codes, and are signed by a licensed physician with their licence number included. GPs and specialists across Canada, the UK, Australia, and the US regularly accept overseas radiology reports of this format. We have not had a report rejected on quality grounds.
How does the AI translation work? Who is responsible for accuracy?
Our AI translation system produces an English draft from the Chinese hospital report. This draft is then reviewed word-by-word by our licensed physician, who corrects errors, adds clinical context, and signs the final report. The physician takes full professional responsibility for the accuracy of the delivered report. AI is a speed tool β the physician is the quality guarantee.
What if my home doctor has questions about the report?
We offer a 30-day follow-up period during which our physician can correspond with your home doctor if clarification is needed. Standard and Premium patients can also book a physician video call.
Will I receive the raw DICOM imaging files?
Yes. Every package includes full DICOM data on a USB or via secure download link. Your specialist can load these into any standard DICOM viewer or PACS system. This is the same format used by hospitals globally.
Process & Travel
How long do I need to be in Beijing?
For a single scan, most patients manage comfortably in 2 nights / 3 days. Day 1: arrive. Day 2: scan (usually morning). Day 3: depart. Your English report will be delivered electronically β you don't need to wait in Beijing for it.
What do I need to bring on scan day?
Passport (required for hospital registration), comfortable clothing without metal fasteners (for MRI), any existing medical records or imaging, and your escort's contact details. We provide a full preparation checklist after booking.
Can I bring a family member or friend?
Yes. Companions may accompany you to the hospital. Our escort will coordinate for your group. If your companion requires translation support throughout the process, please let us know in advance.
What if the hospital appointment needs to be rescheduled?
Hospital rescheduling occasionally happens due to equipment maintenance or emergencies. In this case, we will rebook your appointment at no charge, usually within 24β48 hours. If this significantly disrupts your travel plans, we will work with you on a solution.
Cost & Insurance
Can I claim the cost on my health insurance?
This depends on your specific policy. Many international health insurance plans (Cigna Global, Aetna International, Bupa International, AXA Health) do cover overseas diagnostic imaging. Most national public insurance plans (Canadian provincial health, NHS) do not cover overseas care. Our Standard and Premium packages include insurance documentation. We recommend contacting your insurer before booking.
Are there any hidden fees?
No. Our service fee is fixed. The hospital imaging fee varies by scan type and is disclosed in your booking confirmation before you pay. The only costs you'll face are: our service fee, the hospital imaging fee, and your travel costs (flights, hotel). There are no additional fees from China MedPass.
What currency is the hospital fee paid in?
The hospital fee is paid in Chinese Yuan (CNY) directly to the hospital. We provide guidance on currency exchange. WeChat Pay and Alipay are also accepted at most hospitals β your escort can assist with this.
Safety & Privacy
How is my medical data protected?
Your data is encrypted in transit and at rest, stored on GDPR-compliant servers, and accessed only by your case coordinator and our physician. We do not share patient data with third parties. Full details in our Privacy Policy.
What if I have a reaction or complication during the scan?
MRI and CT scans carry minimal risk for most patients. If contrast dye is used, there is a small risk of allergic reaction β hospitals are fully equipped to manage this. Our escort is trained to respond to medical situations and will coordinate with hospital staff immediately. In a serious emergency, Chinese hospitals operate 24-hour emergency departments.
Is my data shared with Chinese government authorities?
Chinese hospitals, like hospitals in all countries, may be subject to legal obligations to share data in specific circumstances (serious crime, public health emergency). This is not unique to China. In routine cases, your data stays within the hospital and China MedPass. We do not proactively share data with any government authority.
Special Circumstances
I'm claustrophobic. Can I still get an MRI?
Yes. Please inform us at booking. We can arrange for open-bore MRI equipment where available, or discuss sedation options with the hospital. Our escort will ensure the radiographer is aware of your needs before the scan begins.
I have metal implants / a pacemaker. Can I still get an MRI?
This depends on the specific implant. Please provide full details at booking via your medical questionnaire. Our physician will review your case and advise whether MRI is appropriate, or whether CT is a safer alternative.
What if I need to cancel my booking?
Full refund: cancellation 7+ days before scan date. 50% refund: cancellation 3β6 days before scan date. No refund: cancellation within 48 hours of scan date. Cancellations due to documented medical emergency are handled case-by-case.
Do I need a special visa to receive medical care in China?
For most diagnostic and outpatient appointments, a standard tourist visa (L Visa) is sufficient. Many nationalities also qualify for China's visa-free entry or 144-hour transit exemption. For extended treatment or surgical stays, a medical visa may be required β China MedPass provides the hospital invitation letter needed to apply. We confirm your exact visa requirements as part of your booking confirmation.
How do I know China MedPass isn't just promoting hospitals for a commission?
We charge a transparent service fee to you β and nothing else. We receive zero commission, referral fees, or payments from any hospital or medical institution. Our hospital recommendations are based entirely on which institution has the strongest track record for your specific condition. You can verify this: we disclose all partner hospitals publicly and encourage independent research.
