One of the most common questions international patients ask about a health check in China is whether their insurance will pay for it. The honest answer is: it depends entirely on your insurer and plan β but you can improve your chances by understanding how cover works and preparing the right documents. This guide explains the practicalities (it is general information, not insurance advice).
Preventive checks are often the hardest thing to claim
Many international plans (for example from insurers such as Cigna, AXA, Bupa or Allianz) focus on treatment of illness; routine preventive screening is frequently excluded or only partly covered, even when in-patient and diagnostic treatment abroad is well covered. Some premium plans include an annual "wellness" or "health screening" benefit up to a capped amount. Always read your specific policy wording β two plans from the same insurer can differ.
Direct billing vs reimbursement
There are two models. Direct billing (the insurer pays the hospital directly) usually requires the hospital to be in the insurer's network and pre-authorisation in advance β less common for self-pay screening at public hospitals. Reimbursement (you pay, then claim back) is the more typical route for international patients in China: you pay the hospital, collect documents, and submit a claim.
Pre-authorisation
If you hope to claim, contact your insurer before the visit to ask whether a preventive check is covered, whether pre-authorisation is needed, and what documents they require. Skipping this is the most common reason claims are refused.
Documents you are likely to need
- An itemised hospital invoice / receipt (fapiao).
- The test results and a report.
- A clear English translation of the invoice and report.
- Your claim form and any pre-authorisation reference.
- Proof of payment.
An English-translated, itemised set of documents is far easier for an overseas insurer to process β which is exactly what our coordination produces.
How China MedPass helps (and what we can't promise)
We can help you check your policy's requirements, request itemised invoices, and assemble a clean, English-translated document pack to support a claim. We cannot guarantee that your insurer will pay β that decision is theirs, and pre-existing conditions or preventive-care exclusions may apply. Frequently asked questions
Will my insurance cover a health check in China? Possibly, but preventive screening is often excluded or capped. Check your specific policy and ask your insurer before booking.
Can you bill my insurer directly? Usually not for self-pay screening β reimbursement (you pay, then claim) is the typical route. We help prepare the claim documents.
What documents do I need to claim? An itemised invoice, the report and results, English translations, proof of payment and your claim form β ideally with pre-authorisation arranged in advance.
Do you guarantee reimbursement? No. We help you check requirements and prepare documents, but the payment decision rests with your insurer.
