For complex brain tumours, skull-base lesions, hydrocephalus, meningioma, pituitary tumours or conflicting opinions, international patients sometimes seek a neurosurgical review at a major Beijing centre. This guide explains the routing logic, the records needed, and what a review can and cannot do. See also our specialist second opinion service.
Emergency warning: If the patient is becoming drowsy or confused, having seizures, vomiting, suffering a severe headache, worsening weakness, or showing signs of raised pressure in the head, seek urgent local neurosurgical care immediately. International transfer must never delay emergency care.
Beijing neurosurgical directions
- Beijing Tiantan Hospital β one of the world's largest dedicated neurosurgery centres; brain tumours, skull base, neurovascular.
- Xuanwu Hospital β neurology and neurosurgery, skull base and functional neurosurgery.
- PUMCH β where a pituitary or endocrine cause is suspected, a multidisciplinary (MDT) endocrine route may fit.
What records are needed
- Full MRI DICOM image files (not just screenshots) plus the MRI report.
- CT scans if available.
- Any prior neurosurgical letters or operative notes.
- Endocrine / hormone results (especially for suspected pituitary lesions).
- Ophthalmology / visual-field tests if vision is affected.
- Current medication list and a clear description of current clinical status.
- Passport information page if hospital registration or review is arranged.
See how to prepare medical records.
What a review can clarify
- Whether surgery is likely to be considered, and a possible approach.
- Whether a shunt or other procedure may be relevant (e.g. in hydrocephalus).
- The major risks involved and an indicative cost range.
- Whether the patient may be suitable for transfer for treatment.
What a review cannot do
It cannot guarantee treatment acceptance, replace emergency care, or give a definitive diagnosis without full hospital review. All decisions rest with the treating specialists.
How the pathway works
- Case brief and translation of imaging reports.
- Routing to the appropriate centre via the international department.
- Passport registration if an appointment or review is arranged.
- Written specialist review, or in-person consultation if travelling.
- Treatment plan and cost confirmed by the hospital before any visa step.
